Outdoor living in Jones Valley
Most of what Oasis Outdoor Solutions does in Jones Valley is a remodel. We replace worn out patios and decks, add pergolas, patio covers, screen rooms and sunrooms, build outdoor kitchens, and put in putting greens and inground pools. That might be a 1960s brick ranch off Garth Road with the original slab out back, or a newer house in Greenwycke Village, Jones Valley Estates or Lendon with a yard nobody has finished yet. What a Jones Valley backyard usually needs
The older half of the valley is 1960s and 1970s: brick ranches, split levels, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals sitting on large lots under mature trees. The back of those houses tends to have the same three problems. The patio is small and was poured for a different era of outdoor living. There is no shade over it. And the step down from the back door lands somewhere awkward, so nobody walks out there.
Fixing that is mostly a question of level and size. Getting the outdoor floor closer to the door changes how often the space gets used, and building it to the width of the room it opens off makes it feel like part of the house. On a brick home we match the new work to what is already there rather than parking a lighter looking structure against it.
Room to build on a near acre
Lots along Garth Road run large, and some approach a full acre. That is enough ground for a pool, a covered gathering area and a putting green on the same property without any of them crowding the others, which is unusual this close to town.
Size brings its own decisions. Big yards need a reason to walk out into them, so a pergola or pavilion placed away from the house gives the space a destination. Keeping sight lines open from the kitchen window matters when children are swimming. And the mower still has to get around everything you build, which is easier to solve on paper than after the concrete cures.
Backyards framed by four mountains
Jones Valley sits inside Monte Sano, Green Mountain, Huntsville Mountain and Waltons Mountain, and the ridgelines are the reason to face a deck one direction instead of another. We look at where the light falls in the evening, what the neighbors can see, and which corner of the yard has the view worth building toward before drawing anything.
On the valley floor the work is straightforward. On lots that climb toward the mountain toe it takes stepped structures and engineered framing to get a level place to sit, and a custom deck is usually the cleanest answer on that kind of grade.
Golf culture next door
The Ledges sits directly above the valley on Huntsville Mountain, and a lot of Jones Valley households play. That makes a backyard green an easy addition here, either as its own project or as one zone in a larger plan.
What separates a good one from a novelty is contour, multiple cup positions and a surface that drains, plus enough fringe to practice chipping rather than only putting. Red clay over limestone
Jones Valley ground is expansive red clay sitting on limestone, and both halves matter. Clay swells wet and shrinks dry, so footings need depth and bearing rather than a guess. Limestone below can hold cavities, which is a reason to find out what an excavation is sitting on before a pool shell or a heavy structure goes in rather than after.
Drainage is the other half of the same problem, because red clay sheds water slowly and rainfall here is heavy. We plan grade, downspouts and drains as part of the build, so a new patio or inground pool deck moves water away from the house instead of holding it against the foundation.
Built to stay put
The 1989 Airport Road tornado ran a long path straight through Jones Valley and rebuilt a good part of the neighborhood, and people here remember it. It is a fair question to ask any contractor how a structure is fastened down.
Our answer is that connections and hardware are not where we save money. Posts get anchored, ledgers get flashed and bolted, and roof structures get tied into framing that can carry the load. A patio cover or screen room attached to your house should be as solid as the house.
