How does the motor work, and what happens if the power goes out?

A manual crank version exists too and costs less, trading the convenience of automatic closing for a simple mechanical link you turn by hand. A well-designed system can be released to close manually with a hand crank or a battery backup built into the motor housing, and that fallback is worth confirming before you buy rather than after the first outage during a storm.
What happens to a louvered roof when a storm is actually coming?

A retractable canopy is a fabric top on a folding or sliding frame that extends over the patio and pulls back to a compact stack at the house or at a fixed beam, giving you an open sky when it is retracted and a soft, diffused shade when it is out, which reads warmer and less architectural than aluminum blades. It costs less than a full louvered system and more than a plain pergola, and it does not manage rain the way a louvered roof does. A canopy sheds a light shower reasonably well while extended, but it is not built to carry standing water or to stay out through a real storm, and most are meant to retract before hard wind or heavy rain rather than fight through it.
How long does canopy fabric actually hold up under Alabama sun?

A sail bolted to a wood fence post or a light pergola post that was never built for that tension load will pull the post over or tear loose in a real wind, which is the most common failure people report. It needs real structure at every corner, whether that is a dedicated post set in its own footing or a wall connection built for the load, not whatever happened to already be standing in the right spot.
What does a shade sail actually look like after a season or two?
Expect visible sagging and color fade well before the two year mark, because the fabric is under constant tension and constant UV at the same time, which is a harder combination than either stress alone. The weave stretches slightly over time even when properly tensioned, so a sail that looked taut on installation day often needs periodic re-tensioning to keep its shape and to keep water from pooling in a low spot that develops as it stretches. Cheaper fabrics lose their color and start looking chalky within a couple of summers, while better solution-dyed fabrics hold up longer but are still a wearing part, not a permanent fixture the way an aluminum roof plane is.
Can you run a fan, lighting or a heater under any of these?
Yes, but what you can run and how well it works depends on which structure you chose, because a solid closed roof plane gives a stable place to mount weight and wiring in a way an open or fabric structure does not. A louvered roof's beam can carry a ceiling fan and integrated lighting the way a solid patio cover roof can, since the beam is already sized for a real roof load and usually already routes conduit for the motor. A retractable canopy or a shade sail is a much harder surface to mount anything permanent to, since both are meant to move or come down, so lighting there is more often run along adjacent posts or strung separately rather than fixed to the shade structure itself. A patio heater works under any of the three when the fabric or blades are open, but running one under a closed louvered roof needs the same clearance and airflow thinking as running one under any solid roof, since the heat has to go somewhere.
Can a louvered roof be added onto a pergola that already exists?
Usually not, because a louvered system is meaningfully heavier than an open wood or aluminum pergola top, and the posts and footings under an existing pergola were sized for the lighter structure it already carries, not for a solid, wind loaded roof plane. Retrofitting louvered blades onto posts and footings built for open rafters risks overloading a foundation that was never engineered for it, and the honest answer most contractors give is that it needs its own structure built to the louvered system's actual loads from the footing up, not a roof swap on top of what is already standing. If an existing pergola's location and footprint work well, that is useful information for planning the new structure, but the frame itself generally has to be built new.

Choose based on how the space gets used across the year, not on which option costs the least up front.
