What to Check on an Existing Patio Before You Enclose It
Before a patio becomes a screen room or enclosure, check the slab, the existing roof, drainage, power, and the roofline tie-in. Here is what actually sets the scope.
The patio itself is usually the easy part of turning it into an enclosure. What actually sets the scope is what is underneath and around it: whether the slab can carry new posts and a roof tie-in, which way water already moves across it, whether power is already run out there, and how the new wall line will meet the house. A patio that looks ready from the back door can still need footings, regrading, or a rerouted downspout once someone gets under it, and the honest way to find that out is to check these things before a design gets drawn, not after a contract is signed.
Is the slab strong enough to carry a roof?
Most poured patio slabs were built to carry foot traffic and outdoor furniture, not the weight of posts, a roof structure, and whatever wind load that roof picks up. A patio with no power at all means a new circuit has to be run from the house, which is a straightforward job while the wall is still open but a much bigger one once framing and screening or glazing are finished. This is also the moment to decide whether the new room should read as an extension of the house, with a matching door and sightline, or as a distinct outdoor space you step down into. Neither answer is wrong, but it changes the door, the flooring transition, and sometimes the framing around the opening, so it is worth deciding before the wall gets built rather than after.
