A deck that has to rise a story or more to reach the house creates a second usable area most flat-lot decks never get: real square footage underneath it. Left alone, that space collects shade, drips off the decking above every time it rains, and turns into the spot where the mower and the empty pots end up. Making it into something you'd actually sit in takes a few deliberate choices at the framing stage, not an afterthought once the deck is finished. A dry-space system under the deck boards, sloped and channeled to carry water to a controlled point rather than letting it fall straight through the gaps, is what keeps that lower area usable in a downpour instead of turning it into a drip line.
